“The Race” – Vocab Story
WITHOUT THE LETTER ‘W’
The starters gun exploded, a kaleidoscope of balloons floated across the bright blue sky. Over 10,000 moist bodies began pushing and shoving against each other.
My sister, Polly, bounced and stretched, running in place, acting like one of those rodeo bulls trapped in the chutes just before the gates are opened.
I eased my body along cautiously, knowing I would need every ounce of energy I could store up before this race was over.
As the supporters thinned, i began to jog. Polly ran beside me for a small portion of time, as she should since she’s the one that got me into this mess. Yet, before i reached the first mile marker, she couldn’t hold back any longer and ran on ahead, leaving me behind—just like all those other 10,000 people continued to do.
There could only be one champion… and she was determined to be that one.
WITHOUT THE LETTER ‘M’

As the supporters thinned, she began to jog. Polly ran beside her for a short while, as she should since she’s the one that got her into this wreckage. Yet, before i reached the first 10 posts she couldn’t hold back any longer and ran on ahead, leaving her behind—just like all those other 10,000 people continued to do.
There could only be one champion… and she was very strong willed to be that one.
